Why does water make a phone speaker sound muffled?

Water muffles a phone speaker because it adds mass to the parts that are supposed to move freely. A speaker works by vibrating a thin diaphragm hundreds or thousands of times per second, and even a tiny droplet clinging to that diaphragm or to the protective mesh above it weighs the system down and absorbs vibration energy before it reaches your ear.
